The soul of the Republican Party
The recent Congressional election in New York 23 brings up an interesting dilema for Republicans. Will they be telling moderates & pragmatists to hit the road, and only ideologically pure candidates willing to kiss the feet of Rush Limbaugh need apply?
I find it surprising that many many conservatives are cheering the results of the election in NY 23, where the Conservative Party candidate took 2nd place. I always thought 2nd place in a winner take all contest was not a cause for profound celebration.
I live in an area that has a great deal of what used to be called "Country Club Republicans". Wealthy people that enjoyed the tax cuts always lavished on them by Republican presidents. I understand them very well. Will these people be kicked to the curb as well?
Will the Republican Party move to where they would prefer a far right wing idealogue (say someone such as Pat Buchanan) that could never get elected to a pragmatic very electable candidate?
the elections of 2010 will indeed be interesting. Democrats now "own" the train wreck economy, regardless of whether it was dumped on there lap via GW Bush or what. Dems will certainly lose seats in 2010. I suspect the number of seats they lose will depend on how far to the right Republicans wish to go.

Your hypothisis seems to be in the shithouse since the far right canidiate in '23' supported by the far right (Steele-Palin & Company) was flamed out by and more moderate Dem.
This election was more about throw the bastards out and new moderate beginnings from both sides.
We should spread the word in hope. _________________ I Wish You Enough

So in a majority rule country, what would that really mean? _________________ 70th Rally dates are August 9th - 15th, 2010

So in a majority rule country, what would that really mean?
majority has never ruled this country...just special interest groups and lobbyists, which is unfortunate for all of us and our and our kids futures
Just look at Health care as just one little example...where have there been any real talk about reducing costs...Tort reforms, limit or get rid of lawsuits...well if one of the biggest special interest groups (dollars spent at the lobbyist level) is attorneys why would we see any politician embrace hurting this group of fine people?? how are they going to get their free trips, dinners and great gifts that this group lavishly tosses out to these politicians like a dog owner who throws a bone to its dog.
Hmmm I know the trial lawyers groups spend a lot but it seems the drug companies and anti health care reformers have outspend the lawyers by a pretty good margin. You talk about health care as an example but you leave out the biggest lobbyist spenders Where did you get your information on where attorney's are the biggest spending special interest group?
Health care lobbyists are on track to set new spending records this year, with some individual companies nearly doubling their investment compared to previous periods, USA Today reports. The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America spent almost as much by September as it did in the entire year in 2008. America's Health Insurance Plans has spent $1 million more so far this year than over the same period last year (Schouten, 10/21).
The drug industry leads the spending, TIME reports. "(I)n the first six months of this year alone, drug and biotech companies and their trade associations spent more than $110 million - that's about $609,000 a day - to influence lawmakers…" And, "[t]he return on that investment has been considerable." A House amendment extended the number of years biologics companies can avoid competition by generic drug makers from five to 12, "as would legislation passed ... by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee. Then-chairman Ted Kennedy, whose state of Massachusetts is home to many biotech firms, had long supported a 12-year exclusivity period. The industry showed its gratitude last year when Amgen, one of the biggest biotech firms, donated $5 million - twice the size of the next largest donation - to a nonprofit educational institute being built in Kennedy's honor" (Tumulty and Scherer, 10/22).

I agree with this too! I never said the USA.
Special interest groups and lobbyists control is closer in line with the definition of a Republic.
Still, if the majority is out of touch and the majority rules, then by definition, they are in touch because they got what they think they got and wanted to get, just by default. And if the politicians are in touch while the rest of the people are out of touch, but the politicians still vote by majority rule, then I still ask, what does that really mean? Or is it the politicians out of touch and the people in touch?
Just messin with ya TM... didn't mean anything by it...
and sayin 'touch' so much drives Tomo crazy... _________________ 70th Rally dates are August 9th - 15th, 2010
